OCC: FASHION AND. Screen

Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens, Greece

May 2015

A three-day conference investigating the power of costume design in horror and surrealist films and iconic television series.

Conference

A specially curated programme of screenings paired with a rich series of discussions boasting acclaimed international speakers from both industry and academia. Steven Noble – costume designer for Never Let Me Go (2010), Under The Skin (2013) and Theory of Everything (2014) – discussed the pivotal role of costume design with broadcaster and writer Ian Peacock (of BBC Radio 4 fame). FASHION AND. Screen was the first in what will be a series of curated conferences to examine the role of clothes in different disciplines (Coming up in 2016: FASHION AND. Architecture).

Dr. Claire Pajaczkowska, tutor at London’s Royal College of Art and independent filmmaker, discussed costume, power and symbolism in surrealist film. Author and Reader in Fashion Theory Dr. Jonathan Faiers revealed his definition of the negative cinematic wardrobe. Dr. Helen Warner examined gender, fashion and consumer culture in contemporary television. All discussions were chaired by Ian Peacock.
