Barbara Chase-Riboud

Over the period from 1969 until 2008, Barbara Chase-Riboud has created a series of life-size sculptures titled and portraying ‘Malcolm X’. A fusion of metal and textiles, these pieces play with contradictions such as light/heavy and loose/rigid elements. They evoke a sense of balance combining the weak and the strong.

Besides her career as a visual artist, Barbara Chase-Riboud is a bestselling novelist and award-winning poet. She demonstrates how to successfully distribute one’s artistic energy across industries over extended periods of time.
